I was brought onto Society6 to create product previews with traditional photography and photo manipulation. Only weeks after starting I realized that traditional methods were too slow and inaccurate for the scale at which the company wanted to move towards. So I moved forward in creating the process the company now uses to create massive amounts of photorealistic product renderings, using 3D to create each individual product preview. Images are created seconds after the original artist artwork is uploaded.
Creating a virtual studio in 3D software I was able to create virtual product shoots, with proper studio lighting and cameras. I could then change the camera angle or lighting as I desired without the cost associated with reshooting a product.
Creating a virtual product photography studio within the 3D virtual enviorment. Complete with lights, backdrops, reflectors, and camera.
Once I was able to create products in 3D, the next step was to create full 3D environmental previews to show products at their best, in real world situations. These images were used for sales as well as marketing on the site.
Each individual product came with its own set of unique challenges. Uncommon shapes, transparency, shadows created by unique shapes, material matching to product. These are all things I and eventually my team tackled head on everyday in order to create the best possible product previews on any print on demand site.
